Recovery Coach/Peer Support Specialist

We are the behavioral health community organization responsible for the delivery of mental health, substance abuse treatment coordination, and developmental disabilities services for Kent County. We need individuals who are passionate about making a difference by helping others.

We are seeking a candidate who can be dually certified as a Recovery Coach and Peer Support Specialist, this staff must have had lived experience with substance abuse disorder and lived experience with mental health disorder, to assist individuals in understanding and accessing mental health and substance use services while participating in programs offered through Degage Ministries and the 61st District Drug and Sobriety Courts.

When working at the Degage Ministries Hope Lodge, the staff in this position will model for women experiencing homelessness, how to make and keep appointments related to their physical and mental health. The Peer Specialist will also help residents develop skills needed for a more independent living situation, such as cooking, cleaning, and developing healthy relationships and community support.

When working at the 61st District Drug and Sobriety Courts, the staff will model stable recovery for participants in a court sanctioned program that aims to change patterns associated with crime and addiction through a comprehensive treatment and monitoring. The Recovery Coach/Peer Support Specialist will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of therapists, probation officers, attorneys, and judges and will provide out-reach to clients who may be ambivalent about treatment or having difficulty sustaining sobriety.

This position is 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Some flexibility with one’s schedule is welcomed to accommodate appointments outside of this position’s normally scheduled hours based on client need. There is no weekend, on call, or holiday requirements for this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
At least two years relevant work experience, which may include volunteer work.
Actively working in a recovery program (12 step, church/spiritual, or other recovery support group).
State of Michigan Certified Peer Recovery Coach or be eligible to become certified by the State as a Peer Recovery Coach, which requires an individual to have:
Long-term, stable recovery from alcohol and other drugs ;
Able to identify with another individual based on their shared life experiences to promote recovery by removing barriers and obstacles to recovery;
Has been a recipient of mental health and/or substance abuse services for at least one year, with a substantial life disruption due to their substance abuse condition;
Have personal experience with navigating complex substance abuse treatment services.
Certification as Peer Support Specialist or able to obtain certification within first year of employment by meeting the following requirements:
Primary diagnosis of a mental health condition;
A strong personal knowledge of what it is like to have first-hand lived experience with a mental health condition that has caused a substantial life disruption;
Have been a recipient of mental health treatment and/or services for at least one year, with a substantial life disruption due to their mental health condition;
Have personal experience in navigating complex mental health treatment services
Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation for job related use.
Lived experiences with mental illness/developmental disabilities/substance use disorders valued.
Knowledge and skills sufficient for establishing effective relationships with consumers who have a substance use disorder, their families, and team members.
Knowledge about substance use disorders as it pertains to recovery and crisis planning.
Basic computer skills.
Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
Good problem-solving skills.
Work effectively in a multicultural environment and skills and capabilities of bridging language/cultural barriers to Network180 services within diverse communities.
