The Associate Director serves as a senior leader within the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan (CMHA), working in close collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to advance the organization’s mission. This role requires a strategic, hands-on, and highly collaborative professional to support internal operations, policy development, external relationships, member engagement, and committee governance.
The Associate Director provides leadership in organizational functions across areas including board relations, legislative and policy strategy, communications strategy, grant and contract management, and partnerships at the state and federal levels.
Key Responsibilities
Board and Committee Engagement
Serve as standing staff (jointly with CEO) to:
• Board of Directors
• Steering Committee
• Executive Committee
• Legislative and Policy Committee
• Member Services Committee
• Budget and Finance Committee
• Persons Served Advisory Group (lead note-taking and membership tracking)
• Contract and Financial Issues Committee
• Children’s Issues Committee
• Assist in preparing monthly CEO reports and maintain regular communication with board members and officers.
Financial Oversight
• Collaborate with the CEO, CFO, and leadership team to:
o Develop and revise annual budget proposals.
o Prepare budget narratives and presentation materials.
o Participate in budget reviews with Board and committees.
o Participate in the external audit process and manage receivables follow-up.
Partnerships and Stakeholder Relations
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with state and federal partners, including:
o State: MDHHS, Michigan Health Endowment Fund, Michigan Association of Counties, and advocacy coalitions.
o Federal: National Council for Mental Wellbeing, NACBHDD, and CCBHC TA Centers.
• Represent CMHA in regular meetings and strategic collaborations.
Government Relations and Advocacy
• Work with CEO in meeting and communication with state and federal policy makers.
• Attend and contribute to meetings with MDHHS, BPHASA, and legislative stakeholders.
• Participate in rate setting, advisory councils, and other key regulatory discussions.
Grants and Contract Management
• Support writing and management of grants and contracts.
• Act as coordinator for major projects.
• Track deliverables, reporting, and budget compliance in collaboration with grant-funded staff and CFO.
Communications and Media Relations
• Work with CEO and communications partners on strategic media planning.
• Serve as a public-facing spokesperson as needed.
• Support relationships with Issue Media Group and other media platforms.
Membership Engagement
• Contribute to weekly updates and key member communications.
• Support development of the CMHA Impact Report.
• Attend local board meetings and public events on behalf of CMHA.
• Help coordinate Director Forums and interface with PIHP and Provider Alliance members.
Strategic Planning
• Co-lead development and implementation of CMHA’s 5-year strategic plan.
• Assist in drafting and reviewing components in collaboration with senior leadership.
