This training is going VIRTUAL!  Registration closes 5 business days prior to the training.

This 2-day training will begin with a dialogue stemming from a series of questions eliciting trainee experiences with using MI since their participation in the Basic Training.  An in-depth review of the 5 training modules covered in the Basic Training will occur during the 2 days of training via lecture, videos, numerous exercises and real plays.  Participants will gain deeper knowledge of MI and be able to apply MI effectively and efficiently in targeted settings.  Participants will understand how MI is much more than just a client-centered interaction with others and will actively experience its positive impact on developing rapport, identifying change goals, planning for change and evoking motivation for implementing change. The Four Processes, Key Values, the Four Elements of the Spirit of MI and the Four General Principles will be covered in this training.  At the conclusion of this training, participants should be prepared to use Motivational Interviewing at a much deeper level. 

Attendees are required to take the 2 day Motivational Interviewing Basic Skills Training prior to attending Motivational Interviewing Advanced Skills Training. Advanced MI training is intended for clinical directors, supervisors, case managers, supports coordinators, therapists, crisis workers, and any other practitioners at the intermediate or advanced level of practice.

Virtual Participation Guidelines:  
You are expected to actively participate in the virtual training. See below for additional information about virtual education recommendations and requirements. 

  • After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to register via Zoom as well.  You must use the same email address for both registrations and participation. 

  • Your Zoom confirmation email will include the link to access the training.   Recommend that you save Zoom links in your calendar for easy access the day of the training. 

  • Payment must be received 5 business days prior to the training. 

  • You must watch the virtual training LIVE to receive credit for the training. 

  • Only 1 participant per Zoom link—each registrant will need to log in individually for accurate CE participation tracking. 

  • Video camera must be on at all times (unless directed otherwise by presenter). Telephone only option is not acceptable. 

  • Recommend that attendees log into the Zoom waiting room at least 15 minutes before the training begins. 

  • Registration report will indicate arrival time (note for continuing education you must be logged into the virtual training within 5 minutes of the start of the training). 

  • Polls and/or quizzes will be randomly given with a limited time for attendees to respond. This is required for continuing education. 

  • Internet: A strong internet connection is highly recommended. If your internet service is not able to stream videos, it will likely not be strong enough to support a virtual training. You will want a minimum upload speed of 5mbps. If technology may be an issue for you, please contact CMHA at 517-374-6848 to discuss options further. 

  • Each training takes place in the time zone of its location and all agenda times reflect that. 

  • After confirmation that you have fully participated in this training, completed the quiz and evaluation, your Continuing Education Certificate will be emailed to you within 30 days of the training.​

Who Should Attend
This event is sponsored by the adult mental health block grant and is intended only for persons who serve adults through the mental health and substance abuse provider network in the state of Michigan. It contains content appropriate for CEOs, COOs, clinical directors, supervisors, case managers, support coordinators, therapists, crisis workers, peer support specialists and any other practitioners at the beginning, advanced and supervisory levels of practice.

Dan Reed, MA, LPC, Member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)
Dan Reed has over 25 years of experience working in human services. He’s held both direct service and supervisory positions with a primary focus in children and family services in a CMH setting. Dan completed the Motivational Interviewing Train the Trainer – Wyoming Protocol training initiative in the state of Michigan in 2010 and became a Member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2014. Dan has provided MI Basic & Advanced Training in multiple behavioral and physical health settings in the state of Michigan and nationally. Dan is best known for being very passionate about motivational interviewing and how it is helpful for both the client, provider, and a means for replacing traditional deficit-based approaches to engagement and treatment.
CEUs 12 Continuing Education Hours:
Social Workers: This course qualifies for a maximum of 12 continuing education hours. The Community Mental Health Association is an approved provider with the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative. Approved Provider Number: MICEC 060818. Qualifies as “face-to-face (in-person) education.”
Substance Abuse Professionals: CMHAM is approved by Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP). CMHAM maintains the responsibility for the program and content. Substance Abuse Professionals participating in this training may receive a maximum of 12 specific contact hours. It is important that attendees keep a copy of the training brochure containing the descriptions along with their attendance record form. Qualifies as “in-person education.”
Certificate Awarded: After confirmation that you have fully participated in this training (see Virtual Participation section), completed the quiz and evaluation, your Continuing Education Certificate will be emailed to you within 30 days of the training.

*National Accreditation rules indicate that if you are over 5-minutes late or depart early, you forfeit your CEs for the entire training. Please note that this is a National rule that CMHAM must enforce or we could lose our provider status to provide CEs in the future. This rule will be strictly followed.
Cancellation Policy
Substitutions are permitted up to 5 business days prior to the training. No-shows will be billed at the full training rate. Cancellations must be received in writing at least 10 business days prior to the conference for a full refund less a $25 administrative fee. If cancellation is received less than 10 business days prior to the training, no refund will be given. Refunds will be issued within 90 days of the training. You will receive a refund receipt to the email address provided when the original payment was made. If you have not received a receipt, please email your request to dferguson@cmham.org with registrant and organization name, training name and date, and order number.
