This 2-Day introduction to DBT training is intended for persons who serve adults through CMH, CMH Service Providers, PIHP, and PIHP providers in the state of Michigan who are interested in learning the theoretical underpinnings of the treatment. It will explain what the key ingredients are in DBT that make up its empirical base. A basic overview of the original DBT skills will be covered along with how to structure and format skills training groups. This training is targeted toward those who are new to DBT with limited experience and who are looking to fulfill the pre-requisite to attend more comprehensive DBT training in the future.

Virtual Participation Guidelines:  
You are expected to actively participate in the virtual training. See below for additional information about virtual education recommendations and requirements. 

  • After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to register via Zoom as well.  You must use the same email address for both registrations and participation. 

  • Your Zoom confirmation email will include the link to access the training.   Recommend that you save Zoom links in your calendar for easy access the day of the training. 

  • Payment must be received 5 business days prior to the training

  • You must watch the virtual training LIVE to receive credit for the training. 

  • Only 1 participant per Zoom link—each registrant will need to log in individually for accurate CE participation tracking. 

  • Video camera must be on at all times (unless directed otherwise by presenter). Telephone only option is not acceptable. 

  • Recommend that attendees log into the Zoom waiting room at least 15 minutes before the training begins. 

  • Registration report will indicate arrival time (note for continuing education you must be logged into the virtual training within 5 minutes of the start of the training). 

  • Polls and/or quizzes will be randomly given with a limited time for attendees to respond. This is required for continuing education. 

  • Internet: A strong internet connection is highly recommended. If your internet service is not able to stream videos, it will likely not be strong enough to support a virtual training. You will want a minimum upload speed of 5mbps. If technology may be an issue for you, please contact CMHA at 517-374-6848 to discuss options further. 

  • Each training takes place in the time zone of its location and all agenda times reflect that. 

  • After confirmation that you have fully participated in this training, completed the quiz and evaluation, your Continuing Education Certificate will be emailed to you within 30 days of the training. 

Fees $125 per person.

Who Should Attend

This event is sponsored by the adult mental health block grant and is only intended for persons who serve adults through CMH, CMH Service Providers, PIHP, and PIHP providers in the state of Michigan. This seminar contains content appropriate for medical directors, clinical directors, case workers, supports coordinators, and other practitioners at all beginning level of practice.

Presenter(s) Josh Smith, MSW, LMSW, DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician, Co-Owner of DBT Institute of Michigan

Upon Josh getting his Master's Degree in Social Work in 2002, he became an outpatient therapist for Pines Behavioral Health in Coldwater, Michigan. After leaving Pines, Josh went on to lead numerous DBT program development trainings in all levels of care (inpatient, partial/day programs, outpatient, residential and forensic) for both adolescents and adults. From 2005-2012, he was a trainer in DBT for PESI, LLC. During this time, he gave over 300 lectures on DBT all over the United States. From 2012-2015, he contracted with the Department of Corrections in the State of Wisconsin to help train and develop successful DBT programs within multiple adult correctional facilities. Josh is currently the trainer and consultant in DBT for various agencies across the country. Josh is a Clinical Instructor in the School of Social Work and the Department of Psychiatry at Michigan State University where he teaches DBT to MSW students as well as psychiatry residents. He currently provides supervision to a number of clinicians in DBT from across the country in a variety of settings. Josh is a Certified DBT Individual Therapist by the Linehan-Board of Certifiers.
CEUs 11 Continuing Education Hours:
Social Workers: This course qualifies for a maximum of 11 Continuing Education hours. The Community Mental Health Association is an approved provider with the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative. Approved Provider Number: MICEC 060818. Qualifies as “face-to-face (in-person) education.”
Substance Abuse Professionals: CMHAM is approved by Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP). CMHAM maintains the responsibility for the program and content. Substance Abuse Professionals participating in this training may receive a maximum of 11 related contact hours. It is important that attendees keep a copy of the training brochure containing the descriptions along with their attendance record form. Qualifies as “in-person education.”
Certificate Awarded: After confirmation that you have fully participated in this training (see Virtual Participation section), completed the quiz and evaluation, your Continuing Education Certificate will be emailed to you within 30 days of the training.

*National Accreditation rules indicate that if you are over 5-minutes late or depart early, you forfeit your CEs for the entire training. Please note that this is a National rule that CMHAM must enforce or we could lose our provider status to provide CEs in the future. This rule will be strictly followed.
Cancellation Policy Substitutions are permitted up to 5 business days prior to the training. No-shows will be billed at the full training rate. Cancellations must be received in writing at least 10 business days prior to the conference for a full refund less a $25 administrative fee. If cancellation is received less than 10 business days prior to the training, no refund will be given. Refunds will be issued within 90 days of the training. You will receive a refund receipt to the email address provided when the original payment was made.
