Event Details Teaching Motivational Interviewing is designed for individuals who are interested in teaching/training others in the practical application of Motivational Interviewing. Individuals attending should have a good basic understanding of MI and a strong desire to teach MI. The training will cover basic and advanced MI skills interwoven with teaching methods practice. Participants will observe and demonstrate public speaking skills intended to teach MI spirit, style and skill. This training will be taught from Miller, W. R. and Rollnick, S. (2013), “Motivational Interviewing, Helping People Change” (3rd edition) and Rosengren, D. (2018) “Building Motivational Interviewing Skills: A Practitioner Workbook (Applications of Motivational Interviewing) 2nd Edition.”

Agenda Day 1
8:30-9:00am - Registration & Continental Breakfast
9:00-10:30am - Introduction to Elicit-Provide-Elicit. Input from previous MI training & teaching experience, list group priorities/needs & teaching scenarios. Introduce MI as a continuum of communication styles; directing-guiding-following as a dynamic continuum of conversation styles, demonstrate & group processing communication styles. Active listening, listening exercise dyad, Gordon’s Theory of active listening, group process, demonstration, listening road block exercise
10:30-10:45am - Break
10:45am-12:15pm - Teaching the spirit of MI, provide information from MI-3 & elicit group processing, feedback, & concerns about practice applications, spirit demonstration. Video, group process observations, questions & application challenges. Review MI micro skills; open questions, affirmations, reflections, & summaries (OARS), open questions exercise dyad, group process
12:15-1:00pm - Lunch
1:00-2:30pm - Agenda mapping presented. MI demonstration putting it all together group interview, process observations, questions, & application challenges. Putting it all together dyad with MI roadmap & agenda map. Confrontation & personal values examined
2:30-2:45pm - Break
2:45-4:15pm - Explore & practice teaching exercises for MI micro skills. Present value sort cards, demonstration video examining personal values. Continue value sort cards dyad, examining personal values and exploring teaching exercises
4:15pm - Conclusion of Day 1

Day 2

9:00-10:30am - Review & practice MI style, skills, spirit, righting reflex & ambivalence to change, training video, complex reflections, continuing the paragraph & strategies for a broad range of reflections. Change talk, view MI demonstration video, group exercise counting change statement in the demonstration video
10:30-10:45am - Break
10:45am-12:15pm - Explore & practice teaching exercises from Rosengren’s MI Practitioner’s Workbook. Practice teaching focusing; with agenda maps explore possible scenarios for focusing exercise dyad, group process, group exercise expanding variations on reflections
12:15-1:00pm - Lunch
1:00-2:30pm - Video, review style, spirit, & OARS, process observations from video, expand agenda maps & incorporate personal values from exercise. Review affirmations based on accurate empathy & introduce affirmation exercise. Practice thumbs up/thumbs down for MI adherent & non-adherent responses. Review & demonstrate reflections, group process & practice exercise, reflections exercise dyad
2:30-2:45pm - Break
2:45-4:15pm - Affirmation dyad, process accurate affirmations from empathic listening. Final development of personal working definition of MI. Discuss development plan for sustaining EBP training at the agency level, continued performance improvement & practical applications of MI
4:15pm - Conclusion of Training
Who Should Attend This event is sponsored by the adult mental health block grant and is intended for persons who serve adults only through the mental health and substance abuse provider network in the state of Michigan. It contains content appropriate for CEOs, COOs, clinical directors, supervisors, case managers, support coordinators, therapists, crisis workers, peer support specialists and any other practitioners at the beginning, advanced and supervisory levels of practice.
Presenter(s) Randall Estes LMSW, CAADC, CCS, Member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)
Randall (Randy) Estes is a licensed master social worker, certified advanced addiction counselor and certified clinical supervisor currently providing mental health and substance abuse therapy at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, Kalamazoo, MI. He joined the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2010. Providing Motivational Interviewing Training on a national, state, and local level since 2008, Randy is currently a contract Motivational Interviewing Trainer for the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan (CMHA) and the Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI).
CEUs 12 Continuing Education Hours:
Social Workers: This course qualifies for a maximum of 12 continuing education hours. The Community Mental Health Association is an approved provider with the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative. Approved Provider Number: MICEC 060818.
Substance Abuse Professionals: CMHAM is approved by Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP). CMHAM maintains the responsibility for the program and content. Substance Abuse Professionals participating in this training may receive a maximum of 12 specific contact hours. It is important that attendees keep a copy of the training brochure containing the descriptions along with their attendance record form.
Cancellation Policy Substitutions are permitted at any time. No-shows will be billed at the full training rate. Cancellations must be received in writing at least 10 business days prior to the conference for a full refund less a $25 administrative fee. If cancellation is received less than 10 business days prior to the training, no refund will be given.
