Event Details Advanced Motivational Interviewing is designed for individuals who have completed a basic introduction to motivational interviewing. Briefly reviewed are the historical/theoretical foundation, style, and spirit of motivational interviewing applied to co-occurring, integrated healthcare. Advanced MI skills will include; complex reflections, co-constructing a narrative, intentional interview direction, ethics of motivational interviewing, and strategies specific to the four processes of motivational interviewing.
Fees $125 per person.
The fee includes training materials, continental breakfast and lunch both days.
Agenda Day 1
8:30-9:00am - Registration & Continental Breakfast
9:00-10:30am - Welcome/introduction; Input from previous Basic MI training, list priorities and needs of the group. Elicit-Provide-Elicit; Active listening, listening exercise dyad, Gordon's Theory of active listening, group process, demonstration, listening road block exercise; MI as a continuum of communication styles; directing-guiding-following as a dynamic continuum of conversation styles, demonstrate and group processing communication styles
10:30-10:45am - Break
10:45am-12:15pm - The spirit of MI, provide information from MI-3 and group feedback about practice applications, spirit demonstration; MI demonstration video; Review MI micro skills; open questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries (OARS), open questions exercise dyad, group process
12:15-1:00pm - Lunch
1:00-2:30pm - Agenda mapping presented. MI demonstration putting it all together group interview, process; Putting it all together dyad with MI roadmap and agenda map; Confrontation and personal values examined
2:30-2:45pm - Break
2:45-4:15pm - Practice thumbs up/thumbs down for MI adherent and non-adherent responses;
Present value sort cards, demonstration video examining personal values; Value sort cards dyad, examining personal values

10:45am-12:15pm - Practice thumbs up/thumbs down for MI adherent/non-adherent responses; Application of personal values with self-confrontation in behavior change; focusing with agenda maps, explore possible scenarios for focusing exercise dyad, process & group exercise expanding variations on reflections
12:15-1:00pm - Lunch
1:00-2:30pm - Video, observations, expand agenda maps & incorporate personal values from exercise; Review affirmations based on accurate empathy & exercise. Practice thumbs up/thumbs down for MI adherent & non-adherent responses; Review & demonstrate reflections, process & reflections practice exercise, reflections exercise dyad
2:30-2:45pm - Break
2:45-4:15pm - Affirmation dyad, group process accurate affirmations from empathic listening; Final development of personal working definition of MI. Discuss development plan for sustaining EBP at the agency level, continued performance improvement & practical applications of MI
4:15pm - Conclusion of Training
Who Should Attend This event is sponsored by the adult mental health block grant and is intended for persons who serve adults only through the mental health and substance abuse provider network in the state of Michigan. It contains content appropriate for CEOs, COOs, clinical directors, supervisors, case managers, support coordinators, therapists, crisis workers, peer support specialists and any other practitioners at the beginning, advanced and supervisory levels of practice.
Presenter(s) Daryl Goodman, MA, Trainer/Consultant at Goodman Consultation and Training Services
Daryl Goodman has a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Central Michigan University. He has forty-two years of experience in the mental health field including working in both the public and private sector. Presently Daryl is a Trainer and Consultant with Goodman Consultation and Training Services. From 2002 until July 2018 Daryl was the Team Leader for Adults with Mental Illness at West Michigan CMH where he led a case management team, a DBT Team and ACT Team. These teams included therapists and certified peers. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and completed the Michigan Motivational Interviewing Train the Trainer. Daryl is also a trauma informed care trainer having completed train the trainer through the Great Lakes Addiction Technology Transfer Center.
CEUs 12 Continuing Education Hours:
Social Workers: This course qualifies for a maximum of 12 continuing education hours. The Community Mental Health Association is an approved provider with the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative. Approved Provider Number: MICEC 060818.
Substance Abuse Professionals: CMHAM is approved by Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP). CMHAM maintains the responsibility for the program and content. Substance Abuse Professionals participating in this training may receive a maximum of 12 specific contact hours. It is important that attendees keep a copy of the training brochure containing the descriptions along with their attendance record form.
Certificate Awarded: At the conclusion of this training, turn in your Certificate of Attendance form to the CMHAM Staff to be approved. You will turn in the top sheet & retain the bottom sheet which serves as your certificate. No other certificate will be given.

*National Accreditation rules indicate that if you are over 5-minutes late or depart early, you forfeit your CEUs for the entire training. Please note that this is a National rule that CMHAM must enforce or we could lose our provider status to provide CEUs in the future. This rule will be strictly followed.
Cancellation Policy Substitutions are permitted at any time. No-shows will be billed at the full training rate. Cancellations must be received in writing at least 10 business days prior to the conference for a full refund less a $25 administrative fee. If cancellation is received less than 10 business days prior to the training, no refund will be given.
Weather Policy Trainings will take place as scheduled and we will not be able to refund training fees. In the event of severe weather, please check the www.cmham.org website for scheduling delays and event updates.
