About Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs)

Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs) are community-based providers that offer a comprehensive range of mental health and substance use disorder services. CCBHCs are designed to ensure that individuals and families throughout Michigan can access timely, coordinated, and high-quality behavioral health care, regardless of ability to pay or where they live.

Michigan was approved as a CCBHC Demonstration state by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2020.  The CCBHC Demonstration launched in October 2021, expanding access to these enhanced services across the state and supporting stronger, more connected care systems.

CCBHCs strengthen Michigan’s public behavioral health system by:

  • Providing integrated mental health and substance use disorder treatment
  • Offering crisis services, care coordination, and connections to primary care and community supports
  • Serving individuals with complex needs, including children, adults, and those with co-occurring conditions
  • Using data and quality improvement practices to improve outcomes and accountability

CCBHCs play a critical role in supporting Michiganders by expanding access to care, reducing wait times, and ensuring services are person-centered, coordinated, and responsive to community needs.

CCBHC Technical Assistance

The CMHA CCBHC Technical Assistance (TA) Hub is designed to support the growth, implementation, and long-term sustainability of Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics across Michigan.

The intent of the TA Hub is to centralize technical assistance, training opportunities, tools, and communications in one accessible location. By coordinating resources across partners and initiatives, the TA Hub helps reduce duplication, streamline access to information, and ensure Michigan CCBHCs can easily find the support they need.

This section will continue to evolve as additional trainings, guidance documents, and collaborative learning opportunities are added.

Michigan Required Evidence Based Practices

CCBHCs are required to implement Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs) and are expected to use interventions that are supported by empirical research and demonstrate positive outcomes in behavioral health. MDHHS has outlined Michigan specific CCBHC Demonstration EBP requirements. A resource guide has been created to support CCBHC implementation of required EBPs and is available here.

For more information about required and alternative EBPs in Michigan, see the Michigan CCBHC Handbook.
